  • Day 1: Luang Prabang arrival (D)

Welcome to Luang Prabang - the former capital of Laos. Magical and charming, Luang Prabang has preserved its long-standing reputation as a stronghold of Lao culture with its splendid natural scenery and sense of timelessness. Here is plenty to see, some of which are the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, the shrine of Wat Aham and Wat Mai with five tiered roofs and Wat Xieng Thong temple. It is a magnificent piece of architecture, which nestles at the meeting of the Mekong and the Nam Khan River. The temple structures are decorated in various ways with gilded stuccoes as well as doorways and the main sim has a marvelous 'tree life' mosaic pattern on an outer wall.

You include these sights in a half day guided tour, which ends with a climb to Phousi Hill to enjoy a beautiful sunset view of the city and its glowing reflection on the Mekong River. There are 329 steps leading you on zigzag way past various temples to the sacred, gilded stupa of Wat Phousi at the summit. Enjoy dinner at the local restaurant.

  • Day 2: Luang Prabang - Pakou cave - Kuang Si fall (B)

This morning, board a cruise upstream on the Mekong river, which also gives us a beautiful view of the tranquil countryside as well as an interesting visit to the mysterious of Pak Ou Caves. It is famous for thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes. Along the way, you stop at the village of Ban Xanghai, where they make the distillation of local rice wine. It used to be more famous for the big jars it is stored in, which they've been making there for over 2000 years. After that driver to the beautiful Khouangsi Waterfall - where is an ideal for swimming and relaxing. You can climb the stairs and look down from various high viewpoints on the way to the top! Return to Luang Prabang by late afternoon.
  • Day 3: Luang Prabang - Elephant camp

The guide and driver will pick you up at the hotel and then transfer to the Elephant Camp. The elephant trail goes through jungle, past teak plantations and rice paddies, and gives wonderful views of the river valley and the mountain chain. After a one and half hour ride, you will reach the Tad Sae Waterfall - an ideal place for swimming and relaxing. This beautiful place cannot be reached by road. Here you have lunch before starting your trekking excursion. Edging forward along a narrow track, you ascend to the next destination, the Khmu village of Ban Houay Fai. Welcomed by the shy yet curious dwellers, you enjoy a unique encounter in this unspoiled village. The Khmu are the largest group of Lao Theung and have one of the lowest standards of living. Leave the village on a single trail - our sights are filled with farmers working the land, forests of teakwood, distant mountain vistas, and the smiles of passing locals curious about their observers. You return to the camp, crossing the Nam Khan River by water taxi. Transfer back to your hotel in Luang Prabang (approximately 30 minutes).
  • Day 4: Luang Prabang departure (B)

An optional early start gives you the fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning rituals of saffron-clad monks collecting offerings of Alms (ubiquitous sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is very unique in Laos, being the only Buddhist nation still preserving the procession. You will visit the morning Phosi Market where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.
