Russian Market in Phnom Penh

Russian Market, natively known as Phsar Toul Tom Poung, located in the south of the city off Monivong Boulevard and Mao Tse Tung, the market is about a 15-minute tuk tuk ride from riverside. This venue is now recognized as the Russian Market thanks to its popularity amongst Russian expats living in Phnom Penh during the 1980s.

Before you dive in to the bustle of stalls, it’s worth noting which entrance you are using, especially if you hope to meet your driver again. Look for an easily recognisable landmark such as one of the big shops outside the market, or the fruit and vegetable stalls. That way, if you exit in a different direction, you can walk around the outside of the market until you get your bearings.

The area around the Russian Market Phnom Penh is not as busy as other market areas which makes it easy to cross streets and check out shops nearby. On the north side of the Russian Market is an ATM from ABA Bank and there is another one on the south side. On the east side is a branch of famous KFC fast food chain. As the Russian Market is well frequented by western tourists there are now a lot of shops and restaurants around the market which aim at westerners.

We can understand why this market is popular for tourists. After the Night Market and the Central Market, this market is the best market in Phnom Penh to buy souvenirs. The sculptures are mainly handmade from expensive wood, jade or silver. None of this is a problem to take to foreign countries. If you do purchase the whisky with a cobra and a scorpion inside you could be in serious troubles while re-entering your home country. If you decide to buy a bottle you should consume it while you are in Cambodia! The clothes are made either from Cambodian cotton or silk – the silk and cotton here is considered of the world’s finest. Whatever you buy there it is definitely a bargain to be had!
