Vietnam Military History Museum (Hanoi, Vietnam)



Most tourists have more or less heard of Vietnam’s historical and heroic struggle against mighty invaders from France and the USA. They, as a result, now flock to Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular so as to figure out how such a small country as Vietnam could win over in the past severe resistance war!

Hence, in order to retain and preserve the factual objects, artifacts, and vivid proofs of the great national heroic struggle, the Ministry of Defence, under the Vietnam Communist Party’s policy, had the building of the Army Museum (to be changed into Military History Museum in 2002) constructed at the end of 1954, and held its opening ceremony on 22nd December, 1959 on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army foundation.

Vietnam Military History Museum is a museum of military history of Vietnam, located at 28A Dien Bien Phu, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. The museum opened on the occasion of 15th anniversary of establishment of the Vietnam People's army December 22th 1959. This museum collected, stored and displayed 150.000 artifacts, including many artifacts, collections and valuable history that reflect the war against enemy. All things represent military methods from Hung Vuong to Ho Chi Minh term. The display system of Vietnam Military History Museum includes outdoor and indoor system with the area of 3.200 m2 with 2.500 artifacts.

Museum Structure

The museum content covers the six following periods:

  • The history of the Vietnamese nation and the birth of the Vietnam People’s Army
  • The Vietnamese struggle against French colonialism
  • The Vietnamese struggle against American imperialists
  • The Vietnam People’s Army on the path to a regular modern army
  • The People and the Army are oneness, and will be invicible
  • Piece of weaponry displayed in the museum courtyard (such as airplanes, tanks, heavy artilleries, rockets, mortars, bombs, and so forth)

In the first floor of the museum, there have 3 rooms: the first room about the military from the Hung Kings period until Ngo Quyen defeated the Han army at the Bach Dang River in 938. The room in the middle has a statue of Ho Chi Minh President and the images in the first Indochina War in Vietnam (1858-1945). The last room shows about the fight from the Ly to Nguyen dynasty. Many artifacts of historical value are displayed here such as bike in Dien Bien Phu campaign, MiG19 and MiG21 aircraft, Sam 2 and Sam 3 missiles in the campaign against America, especially, the tanks entering the Palace in the center of the room.

The Vietnam Military History Museum is one of the seven national museums in the quantity of the artifacts and visitors nowadays. Through honest and unique original artifacts, the museum really becomes a center of culture and an attractive destination for visitors to learn more about military history of Vietnam.
