This trip gives you a chance to discover Mekong delta - one of the highest producers of rice, vegetables and fruits in Vietnam. Cycling through rice paddies, orchards, along and over a myriad of small irrigation canals will let you see a unique area of Vietnam. You will ride from Ho Chi Minh city, Cai Be, Vinh Long, Can Tho. Visit Cai Rang floating market before heading back to Ho Chi Minh city.
8:00 AM: Depart from your hotel and transfer to Cai Be town. Upon arrival, board a boat to explore the Delta’s waterways. Begin your journey by passing Cai Be’s floating market, cruising among local barges filled with fruits and vegetables. The cruise continues to several local home factories where you can discover traditional methods of making rice paste, rice popcorn, and coconut candies. Enjoy a Vietnamese lunch with a local family.
After lunch, begin your biking trip around An Binh Island, riding through fruit gardens and along peaceful canals. Along the way, stop at local houses to enjoy seasonal fruits and observe beekeeping in wooden boxes at a village farm. Dinner and overnight at a homestay.
Enjoy breakfast at your homestay before departing for Tra Vinh (today’s destination is Vinh Long). Cross the river and cycle along trails through fruit gardens on An Binh Island, following the Mekong River to Cho Lanh. Continue biking to Cai Mon, a place well-known for its nurseries, ornamental plants, and bonsai trees. Witness the colorful life along the riverside and stop to chat with the friendly locals.
Enjoy lunch at a local home. After lunch, continue cycling through the countryside of Mo Cay. Cross narrow canals on a traditional sampan to reach the Co Chien River, then ride the final few kilometers to Tra Vinh — one of the prettiest towns in the Mekong Delta. Enjoy some free time to explore the city and stay overnight at a local hotel.
Tra Vinh has a large ethnic Khmer population, and the area around the market feels—and looks—distinctly Khmer. First impressions may remind you of towns like Takhmao or Takeo in Cambodia. This Khmer influence is especially evident in the many pagodas scattered throughout both the town and the province.
Start your day with a cycling trip to explore Khmer culture and architecture. The route is peaceful, narrow, and scenic all the way to Can Tho. Along the way, stop to visit Ba Om Pond — a highlight of Tra Vinh. The pond is surrounded by small hillocks and ancient sao and dau trees, with roots forming unique and unusual shapes. In the afternoon, flocks of birds gather in the trees, creating a lively and noisy atmosphere.
In the late afternoon, arrive in Can Tho — the largest city in the Mekong Delta, located at the confluence of the Can Tho and Hau Giang Rivers. Check in to your hotel and enjoy some free time.
Wake up in early morning to take the boat trip to Cai Rang Floating Market - one of the most bustling floating markets in Mekong Delta with hundreds of small boats barging. The trading way is unique; each boat usually sells one particular item, whether it is pumpkin, pineapple, sugar cane.
Disembark for a short bike ride to villages of Phong Dien suburb, visit ancient house of Binh Thuy, enjoy delicious lunch before driving back to Ho Chi Minh city.
